The other day I said the word disappointment and it immediately sounded like two words to me … as in … Dis Appointment.
I looked up the word “dis” in the dictionary and it means “to show disrespect for, to neglect, to insult.”
Disappointment: To insult/neglect an appointment
I thought this was interesting and two ideas came to mind:
1. You had an appointment with God and you missed it. Not only did you miss it, but you insulted it, you neglected it, you dissed it.
2. You neglected your appointment with life itself. You didn’t show up. You let it pass you by.
No wonder you’ve been upset! You had a great appointment and you blew it off!
Thankfully, with God and life itself, there are 2nd chances and reschedules.
I thought of another interpretation. When we “appoint” something, we give it meaning — ie. we believe it is true. So if I have “appointed” something as meaningful to me such as something I expect from a friend or something I expect to happen, and it doesn’t happen, I am disappointed. However, if I can stay alert, I can choose to “dis” / discard that “appointment” or that belief/expectation and let it go.
Long ago I heard of a teaching that was ascribed to the Native Americans about the three dark arrows in life; belief, expectation and disappointment. You can’t have one with the others. If you find one of these arrows, you can track back and find the other two and let them go. These “dark arrows” block the light that is seeking to shine throughout your consciousness.
You two are great….thanks for sharing….so many ways to look at things differently..
and they will appear in ways for us to go deeper…..Thanks:-)
